Last night, I started a community ed Tai Chi class. This morning, I feel like I was beaten in a dark alley instead of having spent 1.5 hours in a elementary school gymnasium.
It's obvious why the people who do this every single day live well and long lives: it's WORK. Sure, it looks easy. But, holding some of those positions, as well as the realignment of joints to do those moves properly has worked my muscles in entirely new ways.
Keep in mind that I do a 25 story stair climb every day, so I'm not entirely sedentary. Even with that level of activity, the first class kicked my butt. Which I clearly needed.

Over the last few months, I've gone back to climbing the stairs of the building I work in as my primary exercise. One trip up and back down from the 25th floor (the general floor area I'm on) plus walking to and from my car gives me 35-40 minutes of exercise for free in a workday.
My blood pressure has been dropping (from 130/90 to 114/75) and this week I commented to someone that I felt like I could do 2 trips in a day without my legs falling off. The reply was to ask me if that was the same as climbing the whole building. I had a quick Sir Edmund Hillary moment and decided that since it was there, I'd give climbing the whole building a shot.
So, on Friday, I climbed all 52 stories of the City Center building. I stopped a few times for a minute or so, but don't know how often (I was reading a book on the way up). Overall, it took me 25 minutes to climb to the top and another 10 to come back down. In all, an awful lot of stairs and a surprisingly large sense of accomplishment. What was even more surprising is that Saturday didn't see me incapacitated as a result. I wasn't even sore.
I'm thinking of tackling this every Friday.
