Surface Season Finale on NBC

So, last night's episode was bittersweet. It's over, at least for this season, possibly forever. The finale itself was great. It wrapped things up enough that it would be entirely "unfinished" if they decide not to do another season, but left plenty of unanswered questions to explore if they do.
This series also highlights something that I think doesn't get explored much in TV/movies. In books, you often have a story that's "worth" 300 pages. Others are "worth" 3 such books, while others justify long serial storytelling. We have a bit of this with one-shot movies and sequels with TV covering the longer form stuff, but there isn't much that's specifically aimed at being a 1 or 2 season story *by intention*. There's not much between TV movie/miniseries and see-if-we-can-make-it-last-8-seasons-and-kill-it-without-an-ending.
I think some stories just take that long to tell, but don't justify attempting to turn them into ongoing series. That just tends to water down the storytelling to make sure that you prolong the middle, often leaving no ending at all because of cancellation. Had Carnivale ended after the first season, I would have been seriously irritated, because it wasn't "done" in any sense at that point. Now, at the end of season 2, while I was still disappointed that there won't be a season 3, the primary story arc is complete. There's obviously more story left there that would have made a great season 3, but it's OK that it's over because there was adequate resolution. Surface did that this week too (as did ROME on HBO this year).
Of course, I realize the huge challenge this presents and will likely continue to see only rare instances of this, but a guy can dream can't he?

commented on 3/4/2006 Best new show in a long time. Loved the fact that the 'main' characters all united for the season finale. Since there were only 15 episodes in Season 1, why not air Season 2 early - like in May - or the first part of Season 2 and the remainder in Sept (like SG1, Monk and other shows)? Can't even imagine there wouldn't be many more seasons to this excellent, well-developed story.

commented on 3/9/2006 It was such a short season due to the Winter Olympics, they purposely kept it to 15. As for second season airing in May...they do actually need time to record the show and actors like time off etc. But I can't wait, I hope they at least do a second season within this year.
commented on 3/11/2006 Being subjected to alot of crap US tv, We were in love you the Surface series. I think here in Australia the network that aired it must of known that no 2nd series was being made. The network showed the series in prime time except the last 4 episodes. They showed then at 11:45 on a Sunday night?!?!?!?!?!?!
Your NBC are on winner here, lets hope they have brains in their heads and balls in their pants to ensure a second series.

commented on 4/6/2006 Just saw the last episode (15).. It was truly enjoyable :D.. I really hope they will countinue with the serie and the story.. But only if it isn't going to be like "darrk angels" 2:nd season where every episode had a "new story and a end".. you didn't see the overall story in season 2 at all, which was in the 1th season..
Anyway.. Suface is great show and I loved it alomst all the time!! unfortunately do you have to have a pay-chanel here in sweden to be able to watch it.. So most of the Swedes won't be able to enjoy this wonderful show :(..

commented on 4/11/2006 i live for SURFACE on monday nights....where is my second season? i went to nbc website, and they gave no hint on the surface website, that is some bad marketing, and nothing on tv to advise us when the next season starts. thats just rude. i have to see a psychiatrist and take meds bc i am going thru surface withdrawals. not cool.

I've just read the below interview with the creator Josh Pate, and he has strpngly indicated that there will/possibly be a Season 2, but have to take alot of factors into consideration, i.e NBC's programme roster, slots etc. etc, read for yourself!!
Talk about making a splash: Surface, NBC's freshman sea-creature feature, signed off last Monday with a finale filled with lots of tidal waves and slithery beasties â€" if not satisfying answers about what exactly is going on.
TVGuide.com had the pleasure of picking the brain of series cocreator Josh Pate by hitting him with some burning questions (including, yes, "Will Surface be back in the fall?")
TVGuide.com: Was it always the plan to have all the principals finally unite in the first-season finale?
Josh Pate: Yes. Yes it was. We always wanted to 'cross the streams.'" At first NBC gave us a full pickup, and then they gave us this weird 15 [episode] order, so where the finale fell was changed around, but we always wanted the characters to start to interact in the culmination of Season 1.
TVGuide.com: The multiple-tsunamis: scientific fact or just fascinating TV-show fiction?
Pate: One of the guys on the staff wrote that scene so I'm sure he dug it up somewhere, but... we always call it "Crichton science," meaning that as long as you stay in the kind of Michael Crichton, getting-dinosaur-DNA-from-amber world, you're OK.
TVGuide.com: Were the sea monsters responsible for the catastrophic tsunami, or were they just taking advantage of some totally tubular waves?
Pate: Their digging weakened the mantle of the earth's crust, so that's what made it slip. There was an intention behind releasing the creatures into the ocean, but the creatures themselves are just like termites â€" they just do what they do.
TVGuide.com: Regarding "Iderdex," which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, is it official: have all the good-sounding corporate names been trademarked by real-life companies?
Pate: Yes. You get these lists of names that are acceptable to the legal department, and after you come up with your cool thing, it gets blown up by lawyers, whoever they are. Iderdex is the best that was available.
TVGuide.com: Where are all the monorails going?
Pate: To the bottom of the ocean, Marianas Trench.
TVGuide.com: Is Martha Plimpton's character really dead? TVGuide.com hearts her!
Pate: I have some ideas about where I could take the character, but it's still in the formulation stage. But she is definitely not in a good place. [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: On a 1-to-10 scale, how satisfied were you with the CGI effects for Nimrod? He's certainly a milestone TV character.
Pate: I was satisfied to a 10 with the special effects, but every time we had one, it'd be kind of abandoned because we'd run out of time. There was never any consideration given to the fact that were not Law & Order or Ally McBeal in that no one ever said, "Wow, this show is almost animated in places, we need to give them more time in post[production]" to get the effects exactly where we want them. But as the season went on, we built a bigger and bigger library of Nim's movements. At first, one Nim shot would take two weeks; by the end, they could churn it out in 24 hours. The sad thing is that we always wanted to show more of Nim, but [there is a conflict of opinions with the network].
TVGuide.com: Is there a firm or semifirm plan in your mind for a second season, should NBC decide to pick you up? Things seem to have finished up at a breakneck pace. Is there any steam left?
Pate: Definitely. We're just getting started. To me, this was the epilogue to the ongoing story. We kind of hinted at Kessler, the guy behind all of this stuff, and his emergence is the centerpiece of Year 2. With genetic engineering, you can pretty much engineer anything you want. We have a lot of options and there are a lot of things we want to play, for sure.
TVGuide.com: Were you appreciative to last the season, albeit a shortened one, while so many other new series â€" Threshold included â€" got the hook so speedily?
Pate: Well, I feel like we had the ratings to do it. We were never really on the bubble in the sense of "Will we get pulled?" It was more, "Will we get renewed? Will we get a pickup?" It never got radioactive, like, "Oh my god, they might not air the last five episodes."
TVGuide.com: As our Watercooler editor put it: "For the love of all that is holy, what has become of the talking monkey girl?"
Pate: She's still out there, and I just hope she can swim!
TVGuide.com: Are there any developments regarding the second-season pickup?
Pate: That's not until May. The ratings built the last three episodes and I think that happened because... NBC didn't schedule us like a serial, sequentially, like how Fox runs 24 and Prison Break all in a row. After a five-week break, we came back on January 2, then they aired two, we got preempted by the Golden Globes, and then they aired three and we were done.
TVGuide.com: If you are picked up, is there a chance NBC might bring you back earlier than the fall?
Pate: I don't know. Maybe if we get picked up, they'll run us in repeats as a summer series to kind of reset for next year.... That's possible. We got their attention with the numbers on the finale, and NBC doesn't have a lot of 8 o'clock shows in development, so we're keeping our fingers crossed.
TVGuide.com: What about a juicy tease for Season 2?
Pate: Really, there is this kind of uberbad guy to the whole piece that has only made, like, fleeting appearances, and his presence is something we have always seen [as central to the story]. We've always viewed this series almost like a big sci-fi novel, when the main thing that the novel's about really starts to emerge in Year 2.

I hate it when stations put on a show and then end it without letting you know what the writer wanted has in his head.... If it does not come back on "NBC" then put it on the "sci-fi" channel and see what happens....

Hopefully it will not go the same way as many of the lost legacies thrown to the wayside by over zealous Network Executives seeking only the holy dollar instead of the expanding mind of the telebaby generations.
We as the masses need to rally behind that which we see as true entertainment and not just trivial advertising income sources.

commented on 5/9/2006 I missed the series on its NBC run - and stumbled into it on the iTunes website. I needed something to test my iPod's video capabilities, and the pickings are slim on the iTunes site (I'm sure by this time next year that will be remedied!) so it was a kind of "default" choice. But after the first episode, I was hooked! I've downloaded the entire series now, and have watched it 3 times, and its still not enough. "Surface" is utterly thrilling television, well written, well acted, and beautifully filmed. There have been few series in the history of the media that were this good in the first season (the X-files is a case in point! The earliest shows were not all that great. It wasn't until late in the second season that it really hit its stride - and the best episodes were in season three!) "Surface" started out great, and never lost its focus, energy, or intelligence! I sincerely hope that NBC will renew the show. There is alot of unrealized potential there, and the producers/creators have already shown that they know what to do with it!

I learned through the movie things like hidden biology,dinosaurs in the bible and the fact that not all the technology is in hand of public domain haha.
NBC I think you can do better and make the 2nd season of SURFACE, u have no idea what u are missing.. better do it now b4 Steven Spielberg takes charge of it... hahaha

commented on 7/8/2006 i think you can look up online too the heads of abc and nbc - abc is owned by disney - so write to them - nbc is affilated with universal studios which made jurassic park with steven spielberg who left and now has his own studio - i was not able to find out who the sponsors of these shows were but maybe someone out there knows how to dig a little deeper - surely if the sponsors know that people loved these two shows maybe they would reconsider and bring them back - i think sometimes email just gets terminated - sorry folks i have friends who just delete their email anyway write the old fashion way - i am sure if a studio got tons of mail from the post office they might sit up and take notice - hey these people really want these shows - i think addresses for both nbc and abc are in burbank california but you can look up online and put in red on front of envelope - surface fan or invasion fan
commented on 7/8/2006 just another comment - dont know if anyone watched nominations for the emmys but last year lost got a ton of them as did desperate housewives - this year neither show got anything so does that mean lost is going to be cancelled next - this last season just really dragged and not much was accomplished in the story line as to why they were there -

commented on 7/23/2006 There's not going to be a 2nd season!!! What are the network exec thinking about when they cancelled Surface!!! I never missed an episode. If I wasn't going to be home, I have it TiVo'd so that I would never miss an episode. Episode 15 left me wanting more!!! Please bring it back, if not on your network, see if Scifi will continue Surface. Gee, I'm even watching the reruns on the SciFi channel.
commented on 7/25/2006 Surface was one of the, if not the most entertaining stories ever presented on TV. It is worthy of a movie.
I feel the Pate brothers owe us fans, who stood up for their work by singing partitions, writing NBC, and by getting a lot of new viewers (fans) for them. They should let us know what, if any, plans there are to get another network to pick up the series (SciFi?) or to make a movie to tell the remaining part of the story. If they do not have any plans they could answer the remaining questions about Dr. Kessler (Paper Clip?), the complete story of the orchid, etc.
Another suggestion is that WE, the fans write the remainder of the story.
I would like to send this to Josh Pate but don't know how to get email or letters to them. Can anyone help with this?

commented on 7/25/2006 believe me i have tried to find all the folks connected with surface and i guess the writers dont take email - but they are not to blame for their show being cancelled - its the executives - if anyone reads tv guide magazine there is an article in the issue with the sci fi people on the cover about j j abrams who writes for lost and he also did threshold and he writes in there that he was disappointed that threshold was canelled as he felt the viewers shd have had some kind of a resolution to the story and he was not allowed to write that last episode so the writers for any show can be dropped real fast too just like the show - i am going to try and write the hollywood guy on our local abc news - he seems to have a good connection with people in hollywood - in the meantime - keep emailing sci fi channel nonstop - they must realize there are millions of angry people around the world that surface and invasion got cancelled - i am sick of all the new so called reality shows on this week now even sci fi channel having one - give me a break

I'm so sick of living in an era where everything have to make profit FAST... Anyone remember Dallas or Falcon Crest? I bet they wheren't hit shows the first season either but they kept the shows going and they got HUGE audiences... Bu today if it's not a hit after the first pilot it's cancelled =/

I think that along with the e-mails you send to the executives, you should send along the link to this site so that they can read about everything.
Also, e-mails can be easily deleted and ignored. If you e-mail them don't put a subject like "Save surface" because if everyone here is trying their hardest, they aught to be sick of recieving those e-mails. Title them "From a loyal fan" or "A Matter of great importance". It might not work, but if they can't be 100% sure of what it is about they have to read it. Real post is also just as good.
Surface is one of those shows that doesn't come around very often. The entire family can watch and enjoy it. There isn't any inappropriate humor (as in the simpsons or family guy) or mindless violence (insert list of thousands of shows and movies here) or blatant sexual references (like desperate housewives). The fact that this one show without anything offensive to a family as a whole and even appeals to the smallest kids (Tell me nim isn't just adorable) is being canceled for other violent, sexual, and innapropriate programming shows just how bad our society is as a whole. I respect all of you fighting for this show to stay on the air. Our fight may seem to be a losing one, but that doesn't mean it is.

It was a very interesting mystery series, worth to watch any episode since one likes to see how it goes on.
But with "the final episode" now out, there are so many questions left (not to talk about a classic "happy end") that my rating would go down when there is no season 2.
If not, someone should produce a "seson2 movie" or write a novel, to solve all the open riddles
and create a "happy end"

Finally a show that i could sit down and watch with the family. What a change to watch a show without someone uttering a four letter word every other 10 seconds or rushing into a bedroom for some weird reason. Shame on NBC for dropping the show it really was well done and for FAMILT T.V. this was a smash hit.
So, who's to blame for the poor ratings? I'd have to say NBC I never did see the show promoted on any of the other NETWORKS and I have failed to watch NBC in recent years due to very poor programming being offered. This was the one that would have brought me back. I guess the Peacock ain't that proud these days. Who knows maybe they'll listen up and be proud enough to admit they made a mistake cancelling this show.
Guess I'll have to fire off email to the SCI-FI channel and see if they are listening to the Gneral viewing public.

commented on 9/18/2006 i got another post from save surface so have to ck it out - that was a private website and not by nbc - anyway read new tv guide for fall lineup - cannot belive some of the shows posted that they think people will watch - and went to library and found a book on lost - what its really about - etc - well apparently its taken frm some stuff by stephen king - the stand, twilight zone, x-files, and some other stuff - i am going to write to the book writers - if invasion was too expensive to produce - how much does it cost to produce lost - which to me, is getting really boring - the book if you want to look for it is called UNLOCKING THE MEANING OF LOST - THE UNAUTHORIZED GUIDE AND IS WRITTEN BY LYNNETTE PORTER AND DAVID LAVERY - in the book they go behind who the characters are and who they represent - they talk about lost as lost from people we love, lost from spiritual things, etc.

Other than that, you should move on to another addiction. Heros looks AMAZING. The plot is already written into season 3, so there are no worries about them not doing a season 2 with that series. ^__^

commented on 9/18/2006 Having story written out into multiple seasons does nothing to guarantee that a show stays on. One of my favorites: Carnivale, was written into 5 or so seasons, but didn't go beyond 2. And, TV history is littered with shows that not only had more episodes written, but actually *filmed*, yet they didn't air them. Firefly had 2 or 3 episodes that never aired (though they ended up on the DVD's). Not saying you shouldn't hold out hope on shows you like, but I've pretty much moved to waiting for a season of success before getting attached and then getting season 1 on DVD to catch up.

commented on 9/21/2006 Yes Heroes does look good but it's one I don't trust NBC or any network for that matter . It doesn't matter that they have the story lines up to season 3 if the network doesn't like the ratings it might not make it to episode 3. A popular show for WB , Angel the creator Joss had Season 6 ready to go almost completely {story wise} when WB said you have 5 episodes to finish the show. No one is safe not even popular shows. I wanted to watch Heroes but not only do I not trust NBC it's on Mondays just like Surface would have been.

It smacks tastefully of Invasion, anohter series canned that leaves one breathless not only with the compelling story, but with characters so rich (pardon the pun) and live, you can't wait to see what transpires next. there is another wave of emails and letters coming up for the week of oct 13 to the 20 and on his website he has sample letters you can either write by snail mail or email to the appropriate people - he says surface was very popular in germany and people are sad and upset it got cancelled - also you can read a letter from josh pate on his website that they were not expecting nbc to cancel show - on further note - they have a message board and on there i read that the actor who played catlin is battling lymphona cancer so there is a place where you can email her for support this campaign on this website is called the great tsunami campaign number 2 and he writes we are sending nbc another week of floodwaves and may nbc be buried under the flood - boy i thot that was great - so folks ck out this great website and email and write nbc - hope they get buried under a ton of emails and letters- he suggests if you write to nbc by mail send letters on sea related paper - i found some at walmart with whales on it going to use that or draw nim on your letterhead - one person posted a picture of nim - {0._.0} looks just like him

She has been quite busy but currently her career is on hold do to having Hodgkins Lymphpoma Diesease. She is currently in remission. She is strong and can not wait to get back to LA. She undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville,FL

commented on 6/17/2007 We have only just been able to watch the first season of surface down here in Australia and it is great. Hopefuilly there will be another season or 2 or 3. Judging by the dates on this forum that ius probably getting to be more and more difficult but I will hope that it will happen. Is there anytrhing we can do to assist it being done?

I know NBC won't change is mind because of my letter but i trully hope they will realise that this is not only an american thing but trully a worldwide disappoinment that surface has been cancelled.
It is unffair for all the fans over the world to create one season series, sell DvDs of it to make money on our back and then just cancel it.
Think about it, a second season will be sold all over the world too.
Please bring it back because hope is only hat's left.

commented on 6/17/2007 just went back and reviewed the article in tv guide for june 18th - apparently CBS got sacks of mail and email and nuts - which was a reference to a line in the season finale. now CBS is ordering 7 more episodes to air in november. a network spokesman said they had never seen anything like this, as to the fans response to save the show. even tho the show was low in nelson ratings, in fact it was the lowest, the RATINGS DO NOT REFLECT HOW MANY WATCHED THE SHOW. Jericho was the second most popular show on CBS after CSI and many people recorded it. It's the first show to demonstrate that people watch tv in a new way, says the executive producer Carol Barbee. she says THE NETWORK NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND HOW MANY PEOPLE THEY ARE REALLY REACHING. NBC - TAKE A HINT FROM CBS AND BRING BACK SURFACE!!!!!

Sue - If only that were true. Surface was finished off by Kevin Reilly (previously of NBC, now in charge of FOX and the Sarah Connor Chronicles - shudders)
The Pate brothers wrote a second season when they wrote the first one. Currently they have no plans to film that season, but I feel that as talented as they are, that in time they may command enough "muscle" in Hollywood to do something else with Surface. Keep the faith. Meanwhile feel free to hang out with Jan, myself and lots of other Surface fans at our website...

I really liked this show but the whole time watching it I thought this is really not a TV series it is a movie or mini series and after the final episode and now knowing there will never be a s season 2 I really think the miniseries should have an ending! commented on 12/5/2009 Did it again...got all fired up on a series (Surface) of "watch instantly" on Netflix and BAM no season 2, all those lose ends left untied, all those thoughts of where it would all go, just left wondering what happens to Miles, Daughtry, Rich, and Nim. Damn that just sucks. The show had great actors a great plot and great writers. Guess I'll have to find another series to get into. Bummer
