I'd heard it before, but saw it mentioned on Edward Tufte's site under a question about formatting resume's and wanted to capture and share this quote.

    I always associate this idea with the Prince song When Doves Cry — as legend goes, Prince applied a similar method, removing what was regarded as the backbone of R&B to produce a unique classic… the song has no bass.
